FOREST RESTORATION
In collaboration with the Forestry Division, PISLM has embarked on a project to rehabilitate over 500 hectares of denuded forest. With the help of four dedicated teams spread across the island, over 40,000 seedlings will be planted by the end of the project. Presently eleven plots have been reforested within areas managed by the Forestry Division. In addition, thirteen farms have been provided with plants for restoration. This has positively impacted twelve major watersheds (Cabrits-Douglas Bay Complex, Picard, Eden, Batali, Layou, Pagua, Rosalie, Roseau, Soufriere-Scotts Head, Coulibistrie Complex, and Quayaneri-Morne Jaune Complex). The main forest species planted were Mahogany, Blue Mahoe, and Bois Blanc. The farmers were given various plants such as Apricot, Cocoa, Nutmeg, Mango, Papaya, Gooseberry, Star apple, and Breadfruit.
Seven (7) Government nurseries were rehabilitated with enhanced capacity to ensure an annual output of over 10,000 seedlings. Further, eight (8) privately owned nurseries were engaged to ensure targets were met.
An integral part of PISLM projects involves data collection and management. Data serves as the foundation for informed decision-making. It provides insights, trends, and patterns that help make informed decisions. It also assists in tracking progress and evaluating the success of initiatives.
