The Forestry, Wildlife, and Parks Division is one of the key stakeholders with a very instrumental role in the success of PISLM initiatives in Dominica and is a department within the Ministry of Environment, Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment, and Constituency Empowerment. They have played a pivotal role in working with the consultants involved in preparing the watershed management plans. The ongoing restoration efforts through the reforestation project could only be successful thus far with the collaboration and cooperation of the Forestry and Wildlife Division’s staff. This department has been intimately involved in the implementation of the Sustainable Land Management project and the Strengthening of the resilience of agricultural lands and forests in Dominica in the Aftermath of Hurricane Maria Project. They have also benefited significantly from the several trainings and aid in the form of hardware and equipment such as the following:
- US$100,000.00 for the mobilization of human resources in the reforestation exercise.
- Over US$60K in equipment for Reforestation Project
- PISLM and CYEN hosted a webinar discussion on women, land, and soil science in the Caribbean for DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT DAY 2023
- Training in GIS and data management
About the Forestry, Wildlife & Parks Division

The Dominica Forest Service was established in 1949 and initially was a section within the
Department of Agriculture. Later, a separate Department within the Ministry of Agriculture
was formed and was called the “Forestry Department”. Although the division’s official name
is Forestry and Wildlife Division, commonly referred to as the Forestry, Wildlife and
Parks Division. The Forestry, Wildlife, and National Parks Division (within the Ministry of
Environment, Rural Modernization, and Kalinago Upliftment) is the governmental agency
responsible for the management of forest reserves and national parks, and for the
conservation and protection of wild flora and fauna.
The Division comprises of five (5) core
units, each responsible for a specialized area:

The National Park Unit is the largest Section within the Forestry, Wildlife & Parks Division.
This Unit is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Botanic Gardens and other
public areas in the greater Roseau area, and National sites within the island’s National Parks
System, including the Morne Diablotin National, Morne Trois Pitons National Park, and the
Cabrits National Park. Several other nature sites that are not within the established national
parks, such as the Soufriere Sulphur Springs area, Indian River, and Trafalgar Falls, are also
under the jurisdiction of the Division.

The Conservation, Protection & Maintenance Section is responsible for enforcing several pieces of legislation and their accompanying regulations as they pertain to the protection and management of terrestrial natural resources, as well as the issuing of licenses and permits for hunting, fishing, and timber extraction.
